What Documents Do You Need for Nevada License Plates?

Requirements per Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov) vary by plate type. Select your situation below for a precise document checklist.

Standard / New Plates — Document Checklist

Standard plates are issued with every new Nevada vehicle registration. Per Nevada DMV.

Important: Standard Nevada plates are issued automatically when you register your vehicle. Personalized plates require a separate application and availability check.

1

Nevada Certificate of Title

Original title or properly signed transfer title. If purchasing, the seller signs the back; you sign as buyer.

2

Proof of Nevada Liability Insurance

Minimum $25K/$50K bodily injury, $20K property damage. Must be active and list your vehicle.

3

Government-Issued Photo ID

Driver's license, U.S. passport, or state-issued ID matching the registration applicant's name.

4

Emissions Test Certificate

Clark County/Las Vegas — required for most 1968+ vehicles. Newer vehicles (within 5 model years) are typically exempt.

5

Completed Registration Application (VP-222)

DMV-Xpress prepares this Nevada DMV form on your behalf — no need to download or fill out forms yourself.

6

Payment of Registration Fees

Nevada Governmental Services Tax (based on MSRP/vehicle age) + county and state fees. Our service fee is separate.

Nevada License Plates FAQ — Las Vegas

How long does a Nevada personalized vanity plate combination need to be?

Nevada personalized license plates can have between 2 and 7 characters, including letters, numbers, and spaces. Some characters and combinations are restricted by the Nevada DMV. DMV-Xpress checks your desired combination's availability at dmv.nv.gov and submits your application. If your first choice is unavailable, we help you find alternatives.

What does Nevada offer for specialty license plates?

Nevada offers over 150 specialty license plate designs, including university plates (UNLV, UNR), sports team plates, environmental and cause-based plates, and organization support plates. Some specialty plates require proof of affiliation or minimum order quantities. DMV-Xpress confirms eligibility requirements and handles the full application for your chosen specialty plate design.

What do I need to get Nevada veteran license plates?

Nevada veteran license plates require a DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) showing honorable discharge. Some specialized veteran plates (Purple Heart, POW/MIA, specific branch plates) may require additional documentation. Nevada also offers a veteran designation on Driver's Licenses — however, that service is through the Nevada DMV directly, not through DMV-Xpress.

My Nevada license plates were stolen — what do I do?

If your Nevada license plates were stolen: (1) File a police report with Las Vegas Metro PD or your local department immediately, (2) Obtain a copy of the police report, (3) Contact DMV-Xpress at 702.802.8696 — we will prepare the required affidavit and submit your replacement plate application with your police report. Replacement fees apply and are set by the Nevada DMV.

Can I transfer my personalized or specialty plates to a new vehicle?

Yes — Nevada allows you to transfer personalized and specialty license plates to another vehicle registered in your name. Plate transfers require proof of ownership of both vehicles, updated insurance for the new vehicle, and payment of applicable transfer fees. DMV-Xpress handles plate transfer paperwork at our Las Vegas office.

Are disabled parking plates and placards available through DMV-Xpress?

Disabled parking plates and placards (handicap placards) require medical certification from a licensed healthcare provider and are processed through the Nevada DMV. This service is NOT available through DMV-Xpress. For disabled parking plates/placards, visit dmv.nv.gov or a Nevada DMV office directly. We handle standard, personalized, specialty, veteran, and replacement plates only.
