Per Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov): Nevada offers two permit types — a 10-day permit (for Nevada-registered vehicles) and a 30-day permit (for non-Nevada registered vehicles). Both require active Nevada insurance before issuance. Permits are non-renewable — full registration must be completed within the permit period.

Nevada Temporary Permit FAQ — Las Vegas

What is the difference between a Nevada 10-day and 30-day temporary permit?

Nevada issues two distinct temporary movement permits: (1) The 10-day permit is for vehicles ALREADY registered in Nevada — it allows the vehicle to be legally driven on Nevada roads during a limited period. (2) The 30-day permit is for vehicles NOT currently registered in Nevada — it gives new residents and buyers of out-of-state vehicles 30 days to complete full Nevada registration. Both require active Nevada insurance before issuance.

Can I renew or extend a Nevada temporary movement permit?

No. Nevada temporary movement permits cannot be renewed, extended, or replaced. The 30-day permit provides sufficient time to complete full vehicle registration. If you are having difficulty completing registration within the permit period, contact DMV-Xpress at 702.802.8696 immediately — we can often expedite your full registration before the permit expires.

Do I need Nevada insurance before getting a temporary permit?

Yes — active Nevada liability insurance is required before any temporary movement permit can be issued in Nevada. Minimum coverage: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, $20,000 property damage (25/50/20). You must obtain Nevada insurance before coming to your DMV-Xpress appointment.

Can I get a temporary permit for an out-of-state vehicle I just purchased?

Yes — this is the most common use of the 30-day permit. If you purchased a vehicle from a private party and the vehicle is not registered in Nevada, DMV-Xpress can issue a 30-day permit on the spot so you can legally drive it while completing full registration. You'll need the signed title, your Nevada insurance, and a valid photo ID.

Are temporary permits available for off-highway vehicles (OHVs, ATVs, UTVs)?

No. Off-highway vehicle permits are not available through DMV-Xpress. OHV movement and registration is handled directly by the Nevada DMV. Please visit dmv.nv.gov or a Nevada DMV office for OHV permits and registration. DMV-Xpress handles on-road vehicle permits and registration only.

What happens if my temporary permit expires before I complete full registration?

Driving with an expired temporary permit in Nevada is a violation and may result in a citation. If your permit is about to expire, contact DMV-Xpress at 702.802.8696 immediately. We can often complete your full registration before expiration. Do not wait — expired permits are not renewable.
