What Documents Do You Need for a Nevada Title Transfer?

Requirements based on Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov). Select your transfer type below.

Private Party Vehicle Title Transfer — Nevada DMV Requirements

Buying or selling a car from/to a private individual in Nevada. 30-day transfer window.

Important: Nevada law requires the title transfer to be completed within 30 days of purchase. A late transfer penalty fee applies after 30 days. Do not let the seller sign the title before you are present — it must be signed in your presence.

1

Original Nevada Certificate of Title

Signed by the seller on the reverse side. All fields must be complete: buyer name, date, purchase price, seller signature. Do NOT sign the title before meeting the buyer.

2

Odometer Disclosure Statement

Required for vehicles under 10 years old. Typically on the back of the Nevada title — seller completes the mileage, both parties sign.

3

Bill of Sale (Strongly Recommended)

Include purchase price, date, year/make/model, VIN, buyer/seller full legal names and addresses. DMV-Xpress can prepare this.

4

Proof of Nevada Liability Insurance

Buyer must carry Nevada insurance before registration. Minimum: $25K/$50K bodily injury, $20K property damage.

5

Government-Issued Photo ID

Both buyer and seller IDs may be required. Must match names on the title application.

6

Emissions Test Certificate

Required for most 1968+ vehicles in Clark County (Las Vegas). Ask the seller if a current test is available before purchasing.

7

Notarization (if required)

Certain transfers require notarized signatures — power of attorney, affidavits, etc. DMV-Xpress provides in-office notary for both parties.

8

Payment of Title Transfer & Registration Fees

Nevada DMV title transfer fee + Governmental Services Tax. DMV-Xpress service fee is separate from state fees.

Nevada Title Transfer FAQ — Las Vegas

How long do I have to transfer a vehicle title after buying in Nevada?

Nevada law requires you to complete the title transfer within 30 days of the purchase date. After 30 days, the Nevada DMV charges a penalty fee. DMV-Xpress Services in Las Vegas can process most title transfers the same day — call 702.802.8696 as soon as you complete your purchase.

Does the vehicle title need to be notarized for a Nevada title transfer?

Notarization requirements vary by transfer type. Standard private party sales require proper signatures on the title but may not require notarization. However, transfers involving power of attorney, small estate affidavits, lien releases, or gift affidavits typically require notarization. DMV-Xpress provides in-office notary services so you can complete the entire transaction in one visit — both buyer and seller must be present.

What is the odometer disclosure requirement in Nevada?

Federal law (FACT Act) and Nevada law require an odometer disclosure for most vehicles under 10 years old at the time of sale. In Nevada, the odometer disclosure statement is typically on the reverse side of the Certificate of Title. The seller records the mileage and both parties sign. DMV-Xpress reviews all odometer disclosure requirements at your appointment.

What happens if the vehicle title has a lien (loan) on it?

If your vehicle has an outstanding loan, your lender holds the physical title. When you pay off the loan, the lender sends a "lien release" or the paid-off title to you. DMV-Xpress can help you process the lien release through the Nevada DMV to get the title in your name. If selling a vehicle with a lien, the transaction must be coordinated with the lender.

Can DMV-Xpress handle out-of-state title transfers for new Nevada residents?

Yes. New Nevada residents must transfer their out-of-state title to Nevada within 30 days of establishing residency. The process requires surrendering the out-of-state title, a VIN inspection (Form VP-025), proof of Nevada insurance, and an emissions test in Clark County. DMV-Xpress handles all paperwork and coordinates the VIN inspection for Las Vegas customers.

What if I lost the vehicle title and need to transfer ownership?

If the title is lost, you must first obtain a duplicate title before the transfer can occur. DMV-Xpress can apply for a duplicate title using Nevada DMV Form VP-119, then process the title transfer — all in one visit to our Las Vegas office. See our Duplicate Title service page for full details.
