Title and Registration Transfer Options for New Nevada Residents

If you own your vehicle outright and possess your out-of-state vehicle title, you have two options when moving to Nevada:

  • Option 1: Transfer both your title and registration to Nevada.
  • Option 2: Transfer only your registration and retain your out-of-state title.

Why Transfer Your Title?

While transferring your out-of-state title is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. If you lose your title and need a duplicate, having it registered in Nevada simplifies the process.

  • If you do not transfer your out-of-state title and lose it, you will need to apply for a duplicate title through the state that originally issued it.
  • The State of Nevada cannot issue a duplicate title unless the original title was transferred to Nevada.

Requirements to Transfer Your Title and Registration to Nevada

To transfer your vehicle title and registration into Nevada, you will need:

  • Nevada Auto Insurance:
Secure an active insurance policy in the vehicle owner's name from a licensed Nevada provider.
  • Smog Check (if applicable):
A smog check is required if your vehicle is:
    • Gasoline-powered and over 2 years old.
    • Diesel-powered with a gross vehicle weight under 14,000 lbs.
    • Hybrid gas-electric vehicles require a smog check only after 5 years.
    • Ensure the smog check is completed within 90 days of registration.
  • VIN Inspection:
Take your vehicle to a Nevada DMV office for a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection performed by a DMV inspector. No appointment is necessary—simply drive to the designated VIN Inspection area.
  • Out-of-State Registration and License Plates:
Bring your current out-of-state registration and license plates.
  • Out-of-State Vehicle Title:
Provide the title for your vehicle.
  • Application for Vehicle Registration (Form VP222):
The vehicle owner must sign and submit the VP222 form to complete the process.

Simplify the Process

Transferring your title and registration is the best way to ensure smooth processing and eliminate future complications. For further assistance, contact us for professional DMV services in Nevada.

Registration Fines for Insurance Lapses

Registration fines are imposed on vehicles with a lapse in insurance coverage during an active registration period. The fine amount is determined by:

  • Duration of the lapse in insurance coverage.
  • Number of offenses by the registered owner for that vehicle.

What You Need to Reinstate Your Registration

To reinstate your vehicle registration, the following items are required:

  • The registered owner must be present with a valid form of identification.
  • Proof of current vehicle insurance.
  • A completed Declaration of Responsibility form.
  • If paying with a credit card, submit the Credit Card Authorization Form for DMV fees.

Important Information

  • The DMV does not offer payment plans for suspended vehicle registrations.
  • Each vehicle’s registration is counted independently for fines if you own multiple vehicles.
  • For more details about registration fines, visit the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles website at www.dmvnv.com.
